Webdings Font
(HTML Codes)

Webdings font does not work in the Firefox web browser on two computers I tested March 22, 2012. I tested both meta charset=unicode and utf-8.

I removed the webdings font from all other thySEO web pages, because of Firefox incompatability. Before I made this discovery, I researched webdings html code. The following is what I found.

There are 11 "Core fonts for the Web," started at Microsoft in 1996. They are andale mono, arial, arial black, comic sans ms, courier new, georgia, impact, times new roman, trebuchet ms, verdana and webdings.

Webdings are attractive in SEO because they offer images without the <img src=""> tag, for faster loading pages.

Below are the symbols using <h2><span style="font-family:webdings">__</span></h2>.

Keyboard UPPER CASE:

~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ +:
~!@#$%^&#038;*()_+ |

Q W E R T Y U I O P { } |:

A S D F G H J K L:":

Z X C V B N M < > ?:

Using the following characters yeilds a validator error: &, < and >. & because it is an escape character in HTML/XHTML. < and > because they look like html code to engine crawlers.

Instead of & we can use code &amp;.

Instead of < and > we can use codes &lt; and &gt;.

Keyboard lower case:

` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - =:
`1234567890-= |

q w e r t y u i o p [ ] \:

a s d f g h j k l ; ':

z x c v b n m , . /:

Good HTML Codes:

Microsoft Webdings lists those above and more in "&#___;" values. The extra ones start at (&#127;).

&#033; to &#127;, and &#160; (space) to &#255; should show in most browsers world-wide. Firefox is one browser that does not support (show) any webding fonts.

OnlineWebCheck.com was used to determine the following: Characters &#128 to &#159 should not be used on webpages. #128 to 159 are undefined in HTML, and illegal in XHTML These characters may not display properly on non-Microsoft platforms.

&#128; to &#159; warning found at W3C Markup Validation: "You've included a character reference to a character that is not defined in the document type you've chosen. This is most commonly caused by numerical references to characters from vendor proprietary character repertoires. Often the culprit will be fancy or typographical quote marks from either the Windows or Macintosh character repertoires."

No warnings are showing for &#033; to &#127;, and &#160; (space) to &#255;.
